Profile

Susen Shrestha is a glacio-hydrologist and climate researcher with over a decade in hydrological and hydraulic modelling, climate change impact assessment, and glacier and cryosphere research across the Himalaya and the European Alps.

His doctoral research at the University of Padova integrated ERA5 reanalysis data and ECMWF seasonal climate forecasts for streamflow prediction. As a postdoctoral researcher at EURAC Research in Bolzano he integrated receding glacier volumes into a hydrological model to quantify current and future glacier-melt contribution to the Adige River; his subsequent Padova postdoc applied convection-permitting climate models to snow and flood forecasting in alpine river basins.

He is currently a consultant for hydrological and hydraulic modelling on the Flood Forecasting System at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal, and a research consultant on hydrological modelling, climate change assessment and glacier projects. He is visiting faculty at the Institute of Engineering, teaching glacier and hydrological modelling and climate change modelling to graduate students, and peer-reviews for international journals.

His applied experience covers hydropower feasibility and design studies, flood inundation forecasting and glacio-hydrological field investigation — which is what connects the cryosphere research to the design work the firm sells.
