A hazard map that lives as a PDF on one officer's laptop stops being useful the day that officer transfers. The value of spatial work is in the database behind the map — structured, documented, and reachable by the people who need it during an actual event.

e2services builds multi-hazard GIS databases and the platforms that serve them, alongside the mapping itself. That covers satellite and UAV-based terrain and glacier mapping, DEM and DTM generation from our own aerial acquisition, and production of hazard and risk-zone maps at the scale a municipality or department can act on.

The advantage of doing both the acquisition and the analysis is control over provenance. When the terrain model comes from our own LiDAR or PPK photogrammetry, we know its accuracy, its date and its classification rules — none of which is knowable about a downloaded global DEM being used for slope analysis at village scale.

Web-based platforms for data management and monitoring close the loop, so that a monitoring programme installed in the field has somewhere to report to, and so that the map is a living record rather than a snapshot of the month the study was funded.

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Data audit and schema design

    Existing spatial holdings reviewed, and a database schema designed around how the data will be queried rather than how it happened to arrive.

  2. 02

    Acquisition and compilation

    Satellite imagery, UAV acquisition and field survey combined, with provenance and accuracy recorded for every layer.

  3. 03

    Terrain model generation

    DEM and DTM produced from classified point cloud or photogrammetry, at a resolution matched to the analysis it must support.

  4. 04

    Hazard and risk analysis

    Multi-hazard analysis and zonation, producing risk maps at a scale that supports actual planning decisions.

  5. 05

    Platform delivery and handover

    Web-based access to the database, with documentation and training so the client's own staff can maintain it.

Common questions

Why generate your own DEM instead of using a global dataset?

Global DEMs are the right tool at regional scale and the wrong one at village scale. When the terrain model comes from our own LiDAR or PPK photogrammetry we know its accuracy, its acquisition date and its classification rules — none of which is knowable about a downloaded product being used for slope analysis.

Can our own staff maintain the database afterwards?

That is the intent. We deliver a data dictionary, maintenance documentation and staff training, and our Educational Department can extend that into a fuller capacity building programme where an agency wants it.
