Assignment overview

Rara is Nepal's largest lake, sits above 2,900 metres in Mugu, and had never been surveyed to a standard that would support hydrological analysis or lake-basin management. Its remoteness is precisely why: mobilising survey equipment and crews to the site is a logistics exercise before it is a technical one.

e2services delivered bathymetric and topographic survey of the lake for the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, establishing bed geometry and stored volume alongside shoreline topography, tied to a control network the team established on site.

Control is what makes the numbers usable. A bathymetric surface referenced to an assumed datum tells you the shape of the bed; one referenced to established benchmarks tells you the water level at which that shape holds, which is what any subsequent monitoring or water-balance work depends on.

The same capability transfers directly to glacial lake hazard work, where field verification of stored volume and outlet geometry is the step that separates a verified hazard assessment from a remote-sensing estimate — and where the access conditions are, if anything, harder.
